Neiman published a revealing article detailing a study investigating the relationship between an individuals attitude toward COVID and the local newspaper in their area.
“So could an institution like your local newspaper — broadly considered less partisan and more trustworthy than national media, even in its now-shrunken state — play a role in counter-programming all the national noise? Or would it instead lean into what its readers are already hearing on cable news at night?”
It is a promising notion. The study at hand, conducted by Catie Snow Bailard at George Washington University, rebukes any chance of Local News’ efficacy in moderation. If anything, a robust local newspaper is more likely to polarize its readers. This is indicative of the partisan nature of COVID attitudes.
When the facts are ever changing, the distribution of local and national opinion quickly skews.
