The iconic political activist and one of my father’s good friends Ahmed Kathrada died today. I had the honor of spending time with Kathrada on many occasions. But in particular, I had the privilege of being taken to Robben Island in 1999 where he showed me his and Mandela’s cells. Listening to his stories about the Robben Island prisoner experience firsthand is something I will never forget. His commitment to democracy and equality was a shining light in this world. He will truly be missed. RIP Kathy.
